Charity
An early Staffordshire pearlware figure of Charity.
The figure depicts a mother wearing a gown and burgundy hooded cloak. In her arms she holds a baby. A young unclothed child is sheltered under the folds of her shawl on her left side, and an older child stands on her right side. The older child, wearing a yellow smock, is holding a bible and a red cross.
This figure - a very popular subject - is nicely modelled and legible, but there are signs of age and wear. There are patches of grime in the glaze and spots of discolouration. The mother’s toe is rubbed, there are some superficial chips to the mother’s left hand, the folds of her gown, and the baby’s swaddling clothes, there is loss to the oldest child’s toe, and there are some small chips to the base. There is extensive flaking to the mother’s burgundy cloak, and it is possible that parts of the cloak have been over-painted.
Despite its imperfections, the figure displays well.
Height: 7.25”
Date: c. 1810
