Charity

£175.00

A very attractive early Staffordshire pearlware figure depicting Charity.

Charity is represented as a mother, her breast exposed, carrying a baby in one arm and embracing a young child with the other. Charity wears an orange and green sash and a very elegantly patterned skirt. She stands on naturalistic ground with individually modelled floral sprigs. The whole scene is set on a deep purple base.

This is a very appealing representation of Charity - a popular subject for early 19th century figures - with some lovely decoration (particularly the intricate ground and the pattern of the skirt) and offered in good condition. The neck of the baby has been competently restored and there are just a few chips to the enamel on the tips of some of the sprig leaves.

Height: 8.75”

Date: c. 1820
