A very rare and interesting figure depicting a ‘Bluecoat’ schoolboy. The boy wears a long Tudor-style buttoned coat, bands at the neck, and yellow socks. Under his left arm is a book.
The ‘Bluecoat’ uniform has its origins in the 1500s when King Edward VI established Christ’s Hospital - a philanthropic school for poor children. Over the centuries, several similar schools would adopt the Bluecoat uniform. Today, only Christ’s Hospital retains the tradition.
This figure is a faithful copy of a rare earlier Staffordshire pearlware figure (c. 1825) of a Bluecoat Schoolboy.
The figure is in immaculate original condition - practically as good as the day it was made.
The figure retains its Oliver-Sutton Antiques sticker for provenance.
Reference: No reference found (but a reference to the earlier pearlware figure can be found here at Myrna Schkolne’s website)
Height: 3.75”
Date: c. 1850
Provenance: The Stephen Duckworth Collection; former stock of Oliver-Sutton Antiques
