Staffordshire Religious Nursery Plate, 'Bedtime Prayer' (c. 1840s)

£30.00

A lovely and well made Staffordshire nursery plate of circular form bearing a hand-painted biblically themed transfer depicting two angels looking over a child resting on a chaise longue.

The border of the plate is decorated with moulded daisy-like flowers and a magenta band. The transfer is framed with the following text:

‘I lay my body down to sleep | Let angels guard my head | And through the hours of darkness keep | Their watch around my bed’.

The plate is in generally good condition. There are some imperfections in the application of the enamel of the child’s green sheet. Wear has caused some rubbing to the glaze and discolouration around the inside row of moulded flowers. There is a small, superficial chip to the outside of the rim (about '7 o’clock), and general wear to the rim has resulted in loss of glaze and discolouration.

Diameter: 7.5”
