A very sweet Staffordshire nursery plate of circular form bearing a hand-painted transfer depicting a reading boy and girl among flowers and a large butterfly inn a garden behind a wall.
The border of the plate is decorated with moulded daisy-like flowers and a magenta band. The transfer is simply hand-coloured and is framed with the following text:
‘The tulip and the butterfly | Appear in gayer coats than I Let me dressd [sic] fine as I will | Flies worms and flowers exceed me still’.
The plate is in generally good condition. There are some scratches to the transfer and wear has caused a loss of glaze and discolouration to the inner row of moulded flowers. There is some loss of glaze and discolouration around the rim, but no loss.
Diameter: 7.5”
Date: c. 1840s
