Rare North Shields Pottery Religious Nursery Plate, 'Truth, Piety and Hope' - John Carr & Sons (c. 1865)

£60.00

A rare and very attractive North Shields pottery nursery plate with a hand-coloured religious transfer, made by John Carr & Sons of South Shields.

The rim of the plate is decorated with a painted magenta band. The border features moulded floral and foliate motifs. The hand-coloured transfer depicts the personifications of Truth, Piety, and Hope before an altar, a bright sun in the sky and a garden behind them. Truth raises a hand to the sky while handing a manuscript (the holy scriptures) to Piety. Hope, holding an anchor, looks on. The transfer is circled by the text:

TRUTH PRESENTING PIETY WITH THE. HOLY SCRIPTURES WHILST HOPE IS ADMIRING THE GIFT’.

I can find no source for the image or the text.

The John Carr & Sons mark is impressed on the back. This particular mark features an anchor and a stag’s head which was used by the pottery between 1861 and 1896, and this plate appears to date from around the earlier of those dates.

The plate is in excellent original condition with no damage.

This is a powerful image and it is presented beautifully. A fabulous and unusual nursery plate from a sought-after maker.
