Pearlware Lustre Jug, Princess Charlotte and Prince Leopold, A/F (c. 1816)
A polychrome, hand-painted pearlware jug with purple lustre details made to celebrate the marriage of Princess Charlotte of Wales and Prince Leopold of Belgium in 1816, a year before the former’s death in childbirth.
The faceted pitcher jug has moulded portraits of Princess Charlotte and Prince Leopold on opposing sides and moulded foliate decorations. The features are hand-painted in simple colours and include heavy applications of purple lustre. The rims of the mouth and base are also lustred.
While displaying reasonably well, the jug has sustained some small instances of damage. The handle is cracked and repaired where it joins the body of the jug and there are some small chips or nibbles around the rim. It is offered as found.
Height: 6”
Date: c. 1816
