First Period Worcester Teapot, 'Chinese Family' (c. 1770)

£195.00

A fabulous early Worcester porcelain polychrome globular teapot.

The teapot is decorated with hand-painted enamels in a pattern sometimes referred to as ‘Chinese Family’. It features a number of Chinese characters in a domestic setting. The pattern is repeated on both sides of the teapot’s body. The spout of the teapot is decorated with colourful flowers in a pot, and the handle has a simple iron red floral motif. The lid of the teapot is also decorated with colourful flowers and a finely made floral finial, complete with applied leaves.

The teapot is in good condition - the only visible flaw being a superficial chip on the underside of the rim of the lid which is visible at close inspection from certain angles. Some miniscule flakes to the enamel can also be found at close scrutiny but this is scarcely noticeable when the teapot is displayed. Any such imperfections are clearly shown in the images.

This is a fantastic example of early Worcester chinoiserie and a terrific, high quality piece of early English porcelain.

Height: 4.5” (without the lid); 5.75” (to top of finial)

Date: c. 1770
