Dutch Delft Polychrome Charger (c. 1780) [As Found]
A large Dutch delft charger made in the late 18th century. It is decorated with a colourful flowerhead and floral and foliate spray motifs within a yellow and iron red trim.
An old adhesive plate hanging disc has been affixed to the foot and to avoid the risk of further damage I have not attempted to remove it. Buyers put their trust in this adhesive at their own risk.
The charger is in poor condition. It has suffered from a condition which commonly afflicts earlier delft pottery - namely the rim is heavily chipped all the way round, with a total loss of all glaze on the outside of the rim and many larger historic intrusions too. There are numerous hairline cracks to the glaze on both front and back. However, it does not appear to have actually broken and been repaired at any point - unless there is some historic professional restoration I cannot identify, but it seems unlikely. As is typical with the manufacture of old delft, there is plenty of debris in the glaze. I have attempted to capture the full extent of the condition in these images.
Notwithstanding the damage, this is full of old delft charm including colourful, economic decoration and an imposing scale. Even the damage is, in its own way, a part of this item's history. This said, this charger might be a good candidate for professional restoration if one is so inclined.
